What is Colostrum? v Immune Functionality v Aging Patterns v Mental Outlook/Perceptions v Wellness v Cholesterol levels later in life . . . Just to name a few! Scientific Definition of Colostrum: Colostrum is the Pre-milk fluid produced by mammalian mother's prior to birth. It is not milk! Studies have revealed the importance of colostrum in our society. Adults that were not breast fed as children experienced some of the following difficulties: High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol Levels, Immune Deficiencies, and a Higher propensity to disease. Whereas, adults that were breast fed as children, have a lower susceptibility to many autoimmune related diseases. There is a considerable body of scientific evidence showing that mammals failing to receive an adequate quantity of high quality complete colostrum will be more vulnerable to disease causing bugs and may not develop properly. (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) According to Dr. Alfred Fox, "In addition to containing a high concentration of immunoglobulins, first milking bovine colostrum is a complex resource of biologically active substances necessary to support the development and repair of cells and tissues; to assure the effective and efficient metabolism of nutrients and to initiate and support the immune system." Components of Colostrum The following is a graphic representation from the studies done at a major dairy product-testing laboratory. This characterizes the amount of key ingredients in true bovine colostrum in comparison to other so-called colostrum products being offered for human consumption. The middle set of bars represents "Nature's Perfect" Colostrum Powder. It was carefully collected from a large herd of cows within six hours after birth. Comparison of the tested products shown, clearly demonstrates the differences between these products. The colostrum powder from TWI is virtually identical in chemical composition to "Nature's Perfect" Colostrum Powder. In sharp contrast, the "so-called" colostrum powder, which has most of the fat removed, has been dramatically altered resulting in a substance called transitional milk. Does this really mean that the competitor's product would provide less health benefits than the TWI powder if I chose to use it? Let's compare the amount of one of the most important biologically active components in colostrum, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), in each of these products. The Endocrinology Laboratory of Cornell University of veterinary medicine performed these studies. The results are shown in the graph below. It is immediately evident that the Colostrum Powder from TWI contains almost the same amount of IGF-1 as the "Nature's Perfect" Colostrum Powder. A test performed on three competitor's so-called colostrum powders verified that they contain less than 60% of the IGF-1 found in "Nature's Perfect" Colostrum. Summary Colostrum
offers the broadest possible spectrum of biologically active substances that
promotes the development of a sound body. It assures effective and efficient
metabolism and supports the activation and maintenance of a fully functional
immune system capable of combating potential
insults from microorganisms and other deleterious sources. They include
substances like: v Leptin regulates food intake by regulating your appetite, and how much you consume v Leptin works on taste receptors in the mouth so carbohydrates don't taste as good v Leptin enhances fat metabolism v Leptin aids the thyroid gland v Leptin increases thermogenesis v Leptin works with IGF-1 to build lean muscle, balance blood sugar, and overcome insulin resistance - particularly in diabetic individuals. (44,45,46) v Balancing blood chemistries to regulate insulin resistant weight gain v Leptin Shrinks Fat Cells According to Dr. Alfred Fox, "In addition to containing a high concentration of immunoglobulins, first milking bovine colostrum is a complex resource of biologically active substances necessary to support the development and repair of cells and tissues; to assure the effective and efficient metabolism of nutrients and to initiate and support the immune system." According to the "Fundamentals of Dairy Chemistry", Third Editioin, the chart illustrates how fast the relationship of the biologically active components in bovine colostrum change after birth. True colostrum is from the first milking and collected within six to eight hours after birth. Recognizing this changing relationship is extremely important in defining what bovine colostrum is and in assuring that it contains the maximum amount of biologically active substances. (22)
Apparently, the scientific facts have not reached every manufacturer of colostrum since some of them still market "so-called" colostrum that is collected from multiple milkings after the birth of the calf. This obviously results in much more "product" per cow, but the resulting colostrum powders are deficient in many of the most beneficial components because the remaining constituents have been significantly diluted. Therefore, they will never provide the same range of benefits that can be realized with high quality first milking true colostrum. |
